How do I manage animal crossings?

Animals have been used for biomedical research purposes for decades. Maintaining proper organization, nutrition, care of the animals is a must need for having proper data in experimentation.

For this sole purpose, LabCollector’s animal module allows you to create records for all animals used in laboratory testing. With the help of the animal module, you can keep a track of the animals in cages, their observations, and other analysis. For every experiment, generally, there needs to be a crossing between animals to see the effect on their progeny. Thus, the animal module helps you to create crossing information between animals. For example,  a crossing between a male and a female mouse.

There are 2 possible ways to generate animal crossings in the animal’s module of LabCollector;-

NOTE: In order for a crossing to be made, two animals are needed. One male, and one female, that are already existing in the Animals module. Moreover, when you create a record for an animal, that is going to be used in the crossing, its quantity field should be =1 and not less or more than 1, in order for the crossing to be performed.

 

  • Let’s take an example of poultry breeding organizations that are well-established in poultry; they control the genetics of both broiler and egg production by keeping a track of crossing.
  • The same is with mice or hamsters, as they used extensively for experimentations.
  • Selective breeding (crossing) is the process by which humans use animal breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits (characteristics) by choosing which typically animal females will sexually reproduce and have offspring together. Breeding aims to establish and maintain stable traits, that animals will pass to the next generation.
  • Adding a crossing is important because, this way you can keep the track of which breed, species, with which specific traits were used for breeding purposes.
  • First, go to the animal module and create a male and female animal for the crossing.
  • For example purpose, we have created a mouse male and mouse female records. The quantity of these animals is =1 each.
  • Now go to the ANIMAL MODULE -> ADD NEW CROSSING 

  • When you click on , the below page will pop-up.

    • 1. Here you can add a new crossing.
    • 2. Here you will see the list of already existing animal crossings.

  • When you click on   you will see the details below:

    • 1. Here you can add a male record from the drop-down list.
    • 2. Here you can add a female record from the drop-down list.
    • 3. Here you can add the date of the crossing.
    • 4. Once you are done filling in the details for crossings you can click on the “Add” button.
  • You will see a new crossing in the list below in the pop-up and you will be able to delete it UNTIL it is not used in any other record.

  • Automatically, this crossing will be visible in both animal records in Mouse_A01 & Mouse_Z08.
  • For example, when you go to record the male mouse (Parent 1) and open the record you need to go to the ‘display crossing’ section to see the crossing information.

  • You can also have access to the genogram using the link Open Genealogy Tree which opens a new window with the graphical representation of the crossing.

  • You click on the genealogy tree to see the graphical representation of the crossing.
  • If you want to define an offspring of a crossing that was performed before (n+1 generation), then while creating the offspring record you can choose the ‘crossing origin’ field. This will only be possible if the crossing for parents is added first.
  • Let’s take an example that an above-shown crossing between Mouse_A01 & Mouse_Z08 yielded a male offspring and we created a record for it. When we go to display crossings and click on the genealogy tree it will look like below.
  • If you cross the offspring (Mouse_AZ_01 male) with a new female, then you will not be able to delete the crossing between the parents (Mouse_A01 & Mouse_Z08).

  • As you did a new crossing with an offspring (Mouse_AZ_01) of existing parents, you cannot delete anymore the crossing between the parents.

2. Display crossing – New Entry

  • There is another way to add a new crossing.
  • Go to ANIMAL MODULE -> OPEN A RECORD -> DISPLAY CROSSING OPTION -> NEW ENTRY
  • For example, let’s take a crossing between two hamsters. First, we created a record for two Hamster_Z06 (Female) and Hamster_Z065 (Male).


    • 1. Go to the record you want to create crossing for, for example, two Hamster_Z06 (Female) and open the record by clicking on it./li>
    • 2. Go to the ‘Display Crossing’ option.
    • 3. Click on the ‘New Entry’ option.
    • 4. Select Male animal from the drop-down list.
    • 5. The female is selected by default as we have opened the female record.
    • 6. Here you can insert the crossing date using the calendar.
    • 7. Once you are done adding all the details, you can click on ‘Add’ button. So your crossing will be seen as below.

      • You click on the genealogy tree to see the graphical representation of the crossing.

        • If you want to define an offspring of a crossing that was performed before (n+1 generation), then while creating the offspring record you can choose the ‘crossing origin’ field.
        • Let’s take an example that an above-shown crossing between Hamster_Z06 (Female) and Hamster_Z065 (Male) yielded a male offspring and we created a record for it called Hamster_Z07 (Female).
        • When we go to display crossings and click on the genealogy tree it will look like below.

  • If we make a new crossing between the offspring Hamster_Z07 (Female) with a new male Hamster_Z08 (Male).
  • When we go to display crossings and click on the genealogy tree it will look like below.

  • As you did a crossing with an offspring (Hamster_Z07) you cannot delete anymore the crossing between the parents.
