SUMMARY:

LabCollector allows you to create barcodes for all the records, using their unique ID’s. These barcodes help to gather all the information related to the specific record. You can create barcodes for all samples, reagents, etc. For the barcode printers, you need to set up the printer information in the LabCollector.

LabCollector is capable to print barcode labels easily (see chapter 7 page 93 from LabCollector manual).
Please refer to our KB on how to configure the printer with LabCollector.

To set up and use the Network printer & to define label types please follow the below steps:-

1. Set up the network printer

2. Set up the label size for barcodes

1. Set up the network printer

  • Network printer: These kinds of printers can be used over a ‘print server’ (a device that manages incoming requests & sends print jobs to the appropriate printer.) or with direct printer IP (Internet Protocol). For such printers, you need to know the IP address of the printer and the port number if assigned any.
  • Check this KB to see how to set up a printer.
  • Once you have set up the printer, you need to configure the printer settings in LabCollector.
  • To set up the printer inside your LabCollector, go to HOMEPAGE -> ADMIN-> OTHER -> SETUP -> PRINTERS & LABELS -> NETWORK LABEL PRINTERS
  • On this page, you can define printers with EPL and JSCRIPT languages like Zebra, Brady, or CAB and label roll types.
*To connect a Zebra/Brady printer only working with USB, please follow the KB-connecting printer USB.
  • 1. Here you can add the printer name. For example, we have added a Brady printer name.
  • 2. Here you need to add the IP address or your domain and the port which is by default 9100.
    •  IP address: You can find the IP address for your network printer by using various methods or asking the IT person in your institute
      – Another way to find the IP address is by using third-party software like “Advanced IP Scanner”. You can download this and install it on your computer and click on the “Scan” button to scan all the IP address in your computer’s network. After the scanning is finished you will see the name of your printer and its IP address.
*“Internet Protocol” (IP) — is a string of numbers, separated by dots, that identifies a computer or device on the internet or its local network. Check inside this KB to see how to find IP address.
    • Port: Port 9100 is usually the default port for printing.
WARNING: Leave it untouched unless you have a good reason to change it.
  • 3. You can choose the printer resolution according to your printer. You generally know this when you purchase a printer.
    * You can check the resolution in the printer manual. You can find the manual online too by typing the printer name with series on google.
  • 4. As LabCollector is compatible only with EPL & JSCRIPT printers like Zebra, Brady, or CAB, you can select the language of your printer. You generally know this information when you purchase this, or you can contact our technical support and enquire.
    * You can check the resolution in the printer manual. You can find the information online too by typing the printer name, series & searching for language on google.
NOTE: EPL & JSCRIPT is the only language LabCollector system can detect for a barcode printer.
  • Click on the “Update” once you finish adding the details.
  • You also need to set the dimensions of the labels for your printer. Check section 2 below.

2. Set up the label size for barcodes

  • To set up the label size, go to HOMEPAGE -> ADMIN-> OTHER -> SETUP -> PRINTERS & LABELS -> NETWORK LABEL PRINTERS

  • 1. Here you need to add the label name.
  • 2. Here you need to define the label size. To give a picture of the label sizes, see the image below, to see the various types of labels that can be generated (A1 and B1 & B2).
NOTE: W2 is for labels is for cryo labels where you can either print the barcode or the code to stick on the tube, as shown below (B – B.1 and B.2).
Units: mm (no pixels, no inches). Always round to lower.
    Size format: W:nn/H:nn/LM:nn/G:nn

  • 3. Once you put all the parameters, click on “Update”.
  • 4. When your roll type and label is updated, you have an option to choose it as a default one.
Note
Please take note that when printing your labels, you have the option to select “Switch Columns” for your second label/column. When this box is left unchecked, the second label will automatically be placed on the right side, whereas if it’s checked, it will be positioned on the left side.
